I got the idea for this post after I stumbled upon two fangirls who were almost tearing each others hair out because well they were *HUGE* fangirls of some band member. It was amusing but so utterly ridiculous because let’s face it, I’m sure that band member has no clue that these two girls exist let alone know that he’s apparently “married” to one. Yes, I kid you not. She said ‘married’.
At times like this I really hope I have some of my faith in humanity left by the time I’m no longer a teenager.
So who EXACTLY is a fangirl?
As quoted from Urban Dictionary (because well, the only dictionary to have this word in it is probably Urban Dictionary) “A fangirl is a (female) fan of a character from a movie, anime, video game, etc. or a real life actor or singer. Usually they have an obsession with their “idol” and do various activities to show their love for the said idol. Such activities include ranting about them, making shrines or fanlistings, creating graphics (wallpapers, layouts, etc) that feature the “idol”, writing fanfics and making fanart. Some also make plushies or collect posters and other merchandise of their beloved idol.”
Now obviously there are various types of Fangirls. Let’s put it this way – I fangirl over 5 Seconds of Summer but I certainly don’t put myself in the same category as those girls fighting over a certain band member.
So here are some of the different types of fangirls you’re going to come across some point in your life or have probably already seen.
1. The Originals aka We’re Creepy Stalkers (I like how it sounded like the T.V. show) – These are the girls who’ve been dedicated to the artist/band/t.v show or whatever since the very beginning. They’re the ones who first followed the ‘celebs’ on Twitter and know literally everything about them. They normally think they have some superior bond with the person and are extremely possessive about them. They’ve seen the person/people go through their transformation and have been behind them right from their fetus (teen slang, not literally a fetus) days to their current status. It’s ridiculous but you better not mess with them.
They know everything about the band. From the first song, to the first YouTube cover to even their entire family history. They take great pride in the fact that they know everything and often bore other people with the ton of things they do know. Also, they will cut you off if you haven’t supported the band since the beginning because you ain’t a true fan if you ain’t been with them since the day they were formed.
2. The “Fancy” Followers aka If They’re Famous, I Like Them- These are the people who don’t know a thing about the band but still call themselves fangirls. It’s the type of fangirls who became fangirls of 5 Seconds of Summer after listening to only “She Looks So Perfect” and then going for the concerts when they don’t even know which band member is who. Yes, people like this do exist. Or people who are supposedly MAJOR fangirls of One Direction after only listening to “What Makes You Beautiful”. Yes, I’ve come across a dozen people like this. Or girls who are ‘apparently’ fangirls of Nirvana after listening to one song – Smells Like Teen Spirit.
But because these are famous bands, these girls become fangirls. They’re the type to fangirl just because they think it makes them look good or whatever. They don’t know what actual fangirls are talking about but still join in because they need the attention and hence pretend they’re massive fangirls.
3. The Obsessive Shipper and Stalker aka I’m Watching EVERY single step that you take because we’re married- These fangirls are the most scary people EVER. Legit. They live in some fantasy world where they’re married to the band member and well, all hell breaks loose if someone tries to bring them back to reality. And it’s chaos if two of these type of fangirls meet and realize they’re both in love with the same band member who definitely hasn’t heard of them. They spend their entire day just stalking the band or the band member and know everything, literally everything about them. They’re the type to know exactly when and where the band is and what they’re doing. Their walls are plastered with pictures of the band and they’re the type to but ALL the band merchandise possible.
4. The Sane Fangirl aka I’m a fangirl and I love the band but I will not kill you if you don’t like the band or if you like the same band member- This is probably the safest and nicest fangirl you’ll meet. They’re the one’s who are cool with you not liking the same band or you loving the same band member. They’re obviously a bit possessive but they’re also the one’s who are realistic enough to realise that a million other girls are in love with them. They’re the relaxed ones and even though they know a ton about the band, they don’t go around telling uninterested people what they know.
